BEDROOM FURNITURE: Bedroom Style Guide

The bedroom. If you are like most people, you spend more of your life in your bedroom than anywhere else (expect maybe at your job). Also, if you’re like most people, you’ve spent money on furniture for other rooms of your home - maybe even neglecting your own personal space. So, if you’re interested in upgrading your master bedroom, creating a stunning guest bedroom or equipping your kids with a cool room, you can start by answering the following BEST BEDROOM EVER questionnaire.

1. What colors do you find the most relaxing?

Think back at hotels you’ve visited, what was the most appealing to you and your partner?. Soothing blues, relaxing neutrals, high-energy yellow? You may also consider other colors throughout your home to ensure one room flows to another.

2. What style best describes your favorite bedroom style for slumber?

  1. Coastal Style: natural materials, blue / aqua influences / open windows and doors; imagine a seacoast with crashing waves.
  2. Farmhouse: an update on your grandmother’s bedroom – an eclectic mix of old and new, maybe even some painted furniture or shabby chic upholstery.
  3. Modern: minimal clutter, clean lines, MadMen style.
  4. Spa / Hotel: monochromatic colors, upholstered headboards, neutral colors and décor.
  5. Traditional: well appointed furniture with custom-upholstery drapes and linens.
  6. Urban: loft-like simplicity, textures including hand hewn woods and steel, luxurious lighting.

3. What room(s) are neighboring?

Maybe a luxury master bath, a Jack-and-Jill bath, a sitting room, a deck or patio, a hot tub, a hallway, a walk-in closet?

4. What are your lighting needs?

Do you read or watch TV in your room? What kinds of light do you need to set a romantic mood or to immerse in a novel?

5. How does your desired style impact your furniture selections?

There tends to be two types of bedroom furniture buyers. One who likes a “matching set” (bed, nightstands, dressers / armoires) and the other a “no match” - where eclectic, collected look means furniture styles and finishes vary. One thing to consider is if you want a dresser at all. Many walk-in closet systems offer practical ways to store clothes and can do the job of a dresser. Maybe a desk or seating area can take its place?

As your most intimate space, your bedroom can and should be a haven that truly reflects your personal style. Make the most of your bedroom by completing the project all at once, right away. You may never get to it since other home expenses often take the place of investing in your number one place: your bedroom.
