Make Sure Your Home Is Cozy for the Winter
The winter months are here, which means it's time to start thinking seriously about how you'll keep your home nice and snug during the coldest months of the year. So why suffer?
Invest in a more efficient heating system
You could be losing more money than you realize with an inefficient heating system. An upgrade to your antiquated system could pay for itself in energy savings, not to mention keep your home warmer than ever. Consider updating your heating technology to install a new furnace, boiler or radiant heat system for your floors (there's nothing like warm bathroom tiles on a frigid January night!). It doesn't get much cozier than a gas stove or fireplace; just be sure to shut the flue when you're done!
Shore up your home
Even if you're happy with your current heat source, you could be losing warmth. Prevent heat loss by adding insulation to your attic, replacing windows or putting down extra rugs. If you aren't using a room, close the door to keep warm air contained in the main living area; hunt down drafts, and seal up any cracks. Let the sun shine in during the day, but be sure to close those curtains at night to prevent unnecessary heat loss.
Little things add up
Keeping your home warm doesn't need to be a huge logistical effort; there are many things you can do to impact the overall temperature of your home. Heat rises, and some ceiling fans have a low clockwise winter setting that helps circulate warm air back toward you. It might seem counter-intuitive, but it works! Move furniture away from windows, and be sure nothing blocks your heating vents. Bake something to warm up your kitchen, or boil a pot of water to add indoor humidity. You can even throw in a few cinnamon sticks for a homey aroma. A strategic pile of blankets never hurts, either. Just seeing them on the couch will make you feel warmer!
