Think all tires look alike? Not when you compare them.

One prominent online tire retailer categorizes tires into 10 different performance groups and within those 10 groups, lists 31 different tire types—then breaks down each tire type into brands. That’s a lot of tires to sort through. Fortunately, you don’t have to. The table below shows the most popular tire categories. Once you decide on a tire, head for Safercar.gov. The website, run by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), offers a wealth of comparative information by brand and tire line—including construction, size, traction rating, temperature rating and wear rating.
