5 Room Renovations We Love
Today we’re saluting the regular DIY folks and the pro designers alike who take on making what’s old new again — in a big way. Home restorations and renovations can seem daunting, but these five examples make it look oh so easy.
Designer Maria Castellano restored an old historic home in Barcelona, Spain, carefully balancing the elements already present in the house (the brick and woodwork) with a modern, light aesthetic. We love the drama she creates in the house by contrasting dark accent pieces with a nearly all-white backdrop. But the space isn’t so modern you couldn’t live comfortably in it. She used charcoal hues in the furniture and textiles, left the bricks in the front entrance their natural terra cotta, and added plants everywhere to add warmth, comfort, and personality to the home.

Jillian Guyette and her husband, Robert, are making to rehab a tiny home (900 square feet) in South Jersey. The side-by-side comparison here, while impressive, doesn’t even fully illustrate all the construction that went into updating a kitchen built in the 1950s. A wall came down. A bedroom closet was converted into a pantry. Robert and his father custom-built a butcher block island and seating area. The result is a more open, clean, and functional communal space that directly connects to their living room.

This dreamy home overlooking the Napa Valley was once designed in the style of a French farmhouse. It has been transformed by Wade Design Architects in collaboration with Jennifer Robin Interiors into a contemporary, open living space. In the original layout for the home, the kitchen size didn’t match the rest of the house and the natural views weren’t being highlighted. Using complementary soft accent colors and a modern white base, the home now looks more spacious and inviting.
We’re heading back to Barcelona for this apartment reno by Garmendia Cordero Arquitectos. Here, cool concrete is balanced by warm wood and gold elements throughout. Complemented by unique textures, curved angles, and artistic touches, the apartment has an inviting character that trends modern, but wouldn’t restrict whoever lives in it from showcasing their own personal style.

This cabin in Steamboat Springs, designed by Gerber Berend Design Build, bucks the current design trend toward modern in favor of honoring the architecture and surroundings to great effect. The hallway still brings in a clean white backdrop, but the kitchen goes dark and bold to contrast the natural light wood. Though already beautiful on its own, before the reno the cabin was lacking a communal living space and master bedroom to make the home as functional as it could be.
