DINING ROOM: Round vs. Square/Rectangular Designs

While the formal dining room is no longer a mainstay in some new American homes, many still appreciate the opportunity to dine, on occasion, in a separate environment from the family kitchen. To prepare for those intimate dinner parties, special occasion dinner parties and more, choose the table shape and size that’s right for you.

Start with Measures

Like all furnishing decisions, it’s best to begin by assessing the size and shape of the room as well as any architectural elements that may impact your style choice.

Geometry suggests that a squarer room nicely accommodates a circular table, while a rectangular room supports a rectangular or oblong table.

Chemistry of your dining experience is another consideration. Will your table have “hierarchy” or “equality” among your guests. Even in Medieval times, King Arthur insisted on round tables for his events – believing that all people he invited to join his table would have perceived equal status. Round tables today often foster conversation and enjoyment.

Mind the Chairs

It’s often the case that rectangular tables involve armed chairs at the “head” of the table, whereas round or square tables often use similar chairs (armed or armless) on all sides. If you already own the chairs, this plays into your table selection as well.

Finally, the Floor

Back to the geometry, pay attention to the flooring. If you are using an area rug that is rectangular, a rectangular or oblong table would complete the look, while wall-to-wall carpet or hard surface flooring can accommodate most any table shape.
Enjoy your shopping and many, many happy meals ahead!
