Importance of Energy-Efficient Appliances

In times of rising utility rates, energy-efficient kitchen appliances can positively impact your household spending over the long run. For example, you may be surprised to learn how much electricity a new refrigerator or dishwasher can help you save every year, especially if your current appliances date to the early '90s. Here are a few reasons you should upgrade your kitchen appliances.

Lower energy costs

Investing in a new kitchen appliance can reduce your energy bills1. Promotional financing offers are available to help you purchase new appliances to enjoy now. Your refrigerator consumes more energy than any other kitchen appliance. Replacing a pre-1992 refrigerator with a new, energy-efficient model may save between $100 and $150 a year in electricity.6. Install a new refrigerator and your monthly energy savings accrue from day one. Determine just how much you can save by using the calculator found at the Energy Star website3.

As you shop, check out the Energy Guide label7. on each appliance to get a sense of your potential savings. The label will allow you to assess the relative energy efficiency of one kitchen appliance compared to another. Keep in mind that a brand-new refrigerator only uses about 25 percent of the energy consumed by an average 1975 model.6

Smaller carbon footprint

When you cut energy use, you also reduce your household's carbon footprint. Much of the nation's electricity is still generated from coal and other fossil fuels that generate excess carbon dioxide and other pollution. The Union of Concerned Scientists estimates that each household that completely switches over to Energy Star appliances reduces pollution by an amount equal to that which is generated by an average car over a seven-year time span.

Fewer repairs and more savings.

An aging appliance may require expensive repairs. Purchase one or more new kitchen appliances to make your monthly budget more predictable. A smooth transition from an aging appliance to a new one offers peace of mind. Some utility companies may even remove an old appliance and pay you a nominal amount for it.

The normal life expectancy of a dishwasher is 6-10 years. Improvements in new models may save you $100 or more in electricity over the life of your next dishwasher.5 You can make that dream of upgrading your kitchen a reality. Financing can help. Find an appliance and electronics retailer in your area now and ask about promotional financing offers available at the time of your purchase.
