AREA RUG / FLOORING: Different Types of Area Rugs

Many designers suggest that you begin decorating a room by selecting an area rug and building on it. However, few people have the luxury of scrapping everything they have, so often the reverse is true. What's also true is that there are so many options when it comes to area rugs. With these four tips, you can narrow your search and find the best rug for you!

1. What’s the size of the space you are considering?

If you’re selecting a rug for a bedroom or family/living/great room and you have hard flooring (wood or tile) that you’d like to show, subtract about a foot all the way around so you have a border of your floor showing. For example, if it’s a 12’ x 16’ room, you’d want to consider a rug that’s roughly 10’ x 12’.

2. What's on top?

Now that you have the size of room and a rough idea of the rug size, consider what will be living on top of the rug. If it’s a couch and chairs, remember that at least the front legs of each couch or chair should be on the rug surface (more is better). If it’s a dining room or kitchen table and chairs, make sure all chairs will remain on the surface of the rug when people are seated at your table.

3. What rug style

From simple and monochromatic to contemporary patterns or traditional designs, there is so much to choose from. Take a look online and in store to see what styles you like considering the styles of the furnishings and décor that will live on it. Narrow your search down to a few options then consider the next criteria. Another popular option is to select wall-to-wall carpet and have it cut and bound to your desired size. This option provides endless size possibilities and many finishing options.

4. What rug material is best?

Now that you have a selection of styles in mind, consider the composition of the rug. This will also impact the price of your rug substantially. From wool to synthetics or even sisal (natural material), each option delivers some pros and cons. Durability, cleanability, fade resistance, stain removal, comfort and more are important to consider. If you have pets and/or young children, cleanability may be key for high traffic rooms. Ask your flooring expert for recommendations.

A rug is a big decision and investment. Make sure you measure, evaluate and consider all your options. Unless you are purchasing investment quality rugs that hold their value or even appreciate, it’s going to be a purchase you’ll be living with for quite some time.
